In Baku, activists are creatively protesting the restrictions on climate action during the COP29 summit, striving to make their voices heard despite challenges.

Activists Protest Climate Action Restrictions in Baku

Activists participating in COP29 in Baku continue their work in a more private and secure environment, keeping the location secret for security reasons. However, the restrictions have led to increased creativity among those designing banners and props for protests. One of the protesters expressed, 'We fight to obtain these spaces, and we will fight to keep them.'

In this context, the rules of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) prohibit activists from mentioning specific countries, individuals, or companies. Despite the difficulties, the protesters persist, although they feel that the current restrictions limit their ability to effectively make their demands heard.

On the other hand, in a building in downtown Baku, another group of activists is working on creating impactful visual symbols related to climate action. This year, negotiations have been particularly intense, leading to exhausting late-night discussions among participants.

Although a UNFCCC spokesperson mentioned the presence of safe civic spaces at COP, activists find it frustrating to have to limit their actions to designated areas, instead of participating in large marches as in previous editions. Some expressed their dismay at the difficulty of achieving significant impact.

Despite the challenges, activists remain hopeful and see COP as a crucial opportunity to discuss and address climate injustices. This year, where financing is a crucial topic, they seek to amplify ambitious demands, especially from Global South nations. Although they face obstacles, the protesters remain united in their fight for climate justice.

In a creative action, activists displayed a giant snake with the slogan 'Eradicate the snakes,' symbolizing the elimination of major polluters and fossil fuel proponents at climate summits. Despite the restrictions, they continue to seek innovative ways to convey their messages and draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis.
